We recently got very interesting information regarding our property. In this picture we can see the remains of three Viking-era longhouses and at least ten surrounding buildings at our farm Árbakki. As these Archaeological remains from the Vikings era are impossible to see from a ground level, we honestly had no idea they were there. Few days ago, however, a very excited professor in the field, Árni Einarsson, came to visit. He had spotted these remains seen from above and sent us this photo.
These houses were most likely built in the 9th or 10th century by the settlers of Iceland. They are exceptionally large for the era, around 25m each, and unusually well preserved. Most things have drastically changed since these houses were constructed – but Árbakki remains a timeless location to run an estate 🙂
